Guess what Toriel can be short for? Tu"torial" as Chara can be looked at as the “character.”Īlso, when you say something is the “true” name, it usually suggests that is what is actually someone’s name. Papyrus talks in his font and Sans talks in his font and the greatest evidence that Chara is the intended name for the protagonist is Toriel’s name. Also, the creator’s play on words and names are common in this game. From all the attention to detail in this game, I believe he did that for a reason. It seems that the creator did that on purpose and definitely looks like it. Why didn’t he just type out “Character” instead of Chara? I’m not sure but I think 9 letters can be used. If he just left Chara in as a default name and didn’t care. Having said all that, I don’t think it was intended to be pronounced rather, it’s an abbreviation, so if I had to ‘pronounce’ it I’d just say “(the) character”.

I’m not saying you even have to consider Toby’s intentions at all, for anything goodness knows I can’t just argue away the whole “Death of the Author”…. It’s certainly the easiest option available and probably the most understood one. Now this isn’t to say you shouldn’t call them Chara. Not only is nobody laughing at his joke, but the failure just cascades further until everyone is assuming they’ve discovered the “true” name of this character, who he actually went to great lengths to not give a name to. He then made absolutely no other reference to the name “Chara” whatsoever.įlash forward to release, the game’s a breakout hit, trillions play it, the secret message’s existence is discovered and spread immediately, and the obscure joke doesn’t just fall flat, it gets taken as completely serious, consequential information. It was mostly a joke to himself, but also to the (he expected) few people who had glimpsed it in the earlier trailer. He made it say “The true name,” referencing the fact that it was the placeholder name, the one that he’d known the player character as for the years he’d been working on it. Later, he was making the character naming screen give little messages when you input specific names, and decided to add one for “Chara”. Since he obviously wasn’t going for the ‘finely-polished, ultra-professional’ look, he decided to just use them as they were, for the lulz. He then recorded some footage for one of trailers he made, but accidentally left “Chara” visible in a few clips. Toby used “Chara” as the default entry for the player character’s name variable while he was developing the game.
